Thoughts on New Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines

I’ve been replying to a query about this on Hartford Courant columnist Susan Campbell’s blog, so am going to put some of my thoughts down here at Knitting Clio as well.  Susan writes:

“Here are the new recommendations. Tell me I’m getting all conspiracy-theorist and I will at least half-listen, but we all know women whose [...]

New Emergency Contraception Survey

Posted on August 21, 2009. Filed under: Women's history, Women's Studies, medical history, reproductive rights, research, women's health |

Since the Center for History and New Media is no longer supporting Survey Builder, I have transferred my emergency contraception survey on Survey Monkey.
Please help me spread the word about it.  While I’m covering the entire history of emergency contraception, my replies thus far have mostly been from women and men whose experience with [...]

Colbert makes fun of War on Teen Birth Control

Posted on August 13, 2009. Filed under: reproductive rights, silliness, women's health |

via Our Bodies Our Blog.  Looks like abstinence-only sex education is not the only foolish move by public schools when it comes to preventing teen pregnancy.  Earlier this year, the Washington Post ran a story on a Fairfax, VA honors student who was suspended for taking her birth control pill while at school.  As Deb [...]

Nixon and Abortion

Posted on June 24, 2009. Filed under: Women's Studies, disability studies, reproductive rights |

Yesterday’s New York Times reported on a newly released Nixon tape that reveals the president’s private thoughts on abortion.  Although the President made no public statements about the Roe v. Wade decision, he made the following private statements on January 22, 1973, the day the decision was handed down (audio file here):
Nixon worried that greater [...]

Respecting Choice

Posted on March 5, 2009. Filed under: Women's Studies, disability studies, reproductive rights |

Since my work is on contraception, not assisted reproductive technologies (ART), I’ve been hesitant to weigh in on the controversy surrounding Nadya Suleman.  Since this has come up in my course on disability history — in the context of eugenics (especially sterilization of women deemed “feeble-minded”) and “freak shows” (step right up and see [...]

My hopes have already been dashed. . .

Posted on January 28, 2009. Filed under: Women's Studies, politics, reproductive rights, women's health |

In my last post, I expressed my hopes for the new president when it came to reproductive rights.  After being encouraged by the executive order lifting the Global Gag rule, I am crushed by the latest news from  Reproductive Health Reality Check that President Obama has caved into conservative pressure to eliminate funding for the [...]

Belated Blog for Choice Post

Posted on January 23, 2009. Filed under: politics, reproductive rights, women's health |

Yesterday was Blog for Choice day, in honor of the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade.  Here’s my belated answer.  The question was, What is your top pro-choice hope for President Obama and/or the new Congress?:
Well, this is probably too much — but how about getting someone who is pro-choice to head HHS?  Seriously, I [...]

Politics Trumps Science (again) in the Bush White House

Posted on July 22, 2008. Filed under: politics, reproductive rights |

I’ve been following the various news reports regarding President Bush’s current HHS draft proposal regarding birth control.  I was heartened to see how many members of congress have told him to shove it, led by a certain Senator from New York.  Now, please tell me, why isn’t the Senator from Illinois saying anything about this?  [...]

Presentism, Poxes, and Pap Smears

Posted on February 3, 2008. Filed under: Women's Studies, reproductive rights, research, women's health |

Today’s post tries to bring together a bunch of issues that have come up in my various listserv and blog reading. First, the issue of presentism came up on Christopher Green’s blog, Advances in the History of Psychology. I don’t usually read this blog, but Chris advertised this exchange on Cheiron’s listserv. [...]
